According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one of five American adult mental illnesses experiences one of the 25 living with a serious mental illness. A quarter of chronic mental illness begins before age 14.
In the United States, 18 percent of adult anxiety disorders and depression are the main cause of disability worldwide.
Results from the 2013 Medical Expenditure Study released in 2016 found that one in six Americans takes a psychiatric drug, including sedatives or antidepressants.
While access to mental health medicine is unnecessary and accessibility has contributed to breaking stigmatization on mental health care, some patients seek out drug treatment methods for mental healthcare ̵
1; either with or without additional medication.
Psychiatric practitioners refer to these methods as holistic or integral. They look beyond the diagnosis with other factors in the patient’s life, from relationships to diet, to make lifestyle changes for the better.
John Stiteler, an owner of Total Health Guidance in Orlando, says that positive mental health takes practical and behavior.
“Medicine can be included in the practical part, but it takes a much greater perception to truly treat a patient holistically,” says Stiteler.
A physician of naturopathic psychology, Stiteler, and his staff analyze many angles of a patient’s life to discover which subjects can cause problems in other areas.
“We often see people who work with the four major D divorces, the debt, depression, diabetes. We are not just dealing with the most obvious cause because they are all related,” says Stiteler.
The practice offers services such as acupuncture and detox massage, nutrition counseling, prevention of relapse and counseling.
“We are not in any way opposed to medication. In some cases it is necessary. We try to train and make medication a bridge and not a crutch, “says Stiteler.
Licensed Clinical Psychologist Lara Davis specializes in working with young professionals in the Orlando area who feel overwhelmed with life expectancy regarding things like careers and relationships. She believes that medication can be a real game switch for patients – but it does not suit everyone.
“Medication is a highly individualized decision to be made with a therapist and a knowledgeable medical provider, preferably a psychiatrist. For some diagnoses it has been shown that it is an optimal combination of treatment to seek treatment and find the right medicine, says Davis.
“For some, medication is not needed and for some it makes a big difference. I like thinking about medicine as another tool in the toolbox, but not the only answer. ”
When the patients arrive, Davis takes a large-scale approach for practical reasons. An individual may feel distressed. She discusses the patient’s sleep, nutrition, hydration and exercise patterns with them and comes up with practical solutions such as walking just 30 minutes earlier normal or pre-planning of meals and snacks. Talk therapy is also vital, she says.
“Therapy is for everyone. It is not only reserved for when you feel really sad, worried or after a trauma. It can be used as prevention, for clarity, refocusing and learning about yourself from an impartial source, she says.
In many cases, small lifestyle adjustments can add more mental breakthroughs. Covyn Montemayor is an acupuncture at Total Health Guidance in Orlando who practices East Asian medicine focusing on mindfulness.
Lifestyle plays a major role in maintaining and restoring mental health. I would say that the most important lifestyle choices that affect health are diet, movement, and sleep. Everybody has the same influence on the body and mind, “says Montemayor.
Talking to a therapist can also give great fear.
“Most people tend to consider some things and think of others. Space as these two exchanges creates space for much stress, anxiety, depression, frustration, anger, sadness and more,” Montemayor says. “I strongly encourage my customers to talk with an advisor who can objectively speak in his relationships, situations, and lives. ”
